Consistency, It's What You Make It
Like it or not, social media has become part of our professional lives in every way.
To put it in perspective, the average Australian spends six hours a day online. That’s 37.5% of our waking hours. So it’s no surprise professionals are feeling the pull to use social media: to build a profile, access customer attention, and open doors to new opportunities.
But the way most “influencers” - I make that delineation - talk about LinkedIn is, frankly, terrifying.
You’ve probably heard these before:
- “Send 25 connection requests a day.”
- “Comment 50 times.”
- “Post every day without fail.”
No wonder so many people give up before they start. It sounds exhausting.

The honest truth? That advice is nonsense.
The assumption behind it is twofold: first, that consistency equals success; and second, that consistency has to look a certain way. But the moment you let someone else define what consistency means for you, you lose your agency. You stop being in control of your own rhythm.
When I interviewed Chris Clarke — a professional who creates content (and yes, I make that delineation) — he said something that felt far closer to the truth:
|
“Consistency is whatever you make it. When I started, it was once a week. Now it’s every day. Consistency is constantly evolving and changing.”
For me, that’s a much healthier take. It recognises that life shifts. Roles change. Priorities move and energy levels fluctuate.
Because no one else’s formula knows you better than you do. So, do you.
That said, most of us still need some kind of accountability to stay on track. Once you accept that consistency can be subjective and fluid, you can start to build a framework around it — one that keeps you grounded without boxing you in.
That’s where what I call true consistency comes in.
True consistency works for you, not for an algorithm. It’s not just about timing — it goes deeper, taking into account your presentation and contribution too. It gives you the agency to adapt your habits to your life, not the other way around.
Depending on your goals, you might choose to show up consistently in one of these areas — or across all three.
Here’s what that looks like:
Timing: Plan your content ahead of time so you can post regularly, without stress.
Presentation: If you prefer a more ad-hoc style, define your tone and format early. That way, even if your schedule isn’t rigid, your presence still feels consistent.
Contribution: Even if you’re not posting, engage intentionally with other people’s content. Show up where you believe it matters.
Consistency isn’t quantifiable.
If it doesn’t work for you, you simply won’t follow through.
Simple, Successful, Social

On the topic of consistency let's do a throw back to one of Sellings Creative earlier episodes...
Having followed Chris for years, what’s always struck me is how his no-frills approach to content has built him a thriving business.
Before becoming a buyers’ agent, Chris spent a decade in recruitment. When he decided to pivot industries, he didn’t rely on ads or a big marketing team — he built trust and visibility through consistent, educational content.
In our conversation, Chris shares how his background in drama and public speaking helped him find confidence on camera, how a COVID-era Zoom experiment sparked his entire content strategy, and why reflection and consistency are the real creative edge in business.
If you’ve ever felt like content creation is “too much work,” or that creativity doesn’t belong in sales, this episode might just change your mind.

The B2B Podcasters Show with Loic J
This month, I had the chance to flip roles and share the story behind Selling’s Creative.
Loic and I talked about how the podcast began, what inspired it, and why creativity sits at the heart of modern sales. I unpacked the early challenges sales teams face when building digital momentum, the difference between networking and genuinely connecting, and how creativity isn’t just for content, it’s a strategic skill for business growth.
If you’ve ever wondered how Selling’s Creative came to life (and why creativity matters more than ever in sales), this episode is worth a listen.
