Your Business Doesn't Always Need More Leads…

by Brad Eather
Oct 31, 2026

A friend of mine was telling me about his health and wellness business over the weekend.

After spending the last decade working with clients one-on-one, he decided it was time to challenge himself: build out a digital product, streamline operations, and scale revenue.

For the last 12 months, that’s exactly what he did. He launched an online program, built a new website, crafted lead magnets, wrote nurture sequences, and posted consistently across social media. He did it all—diversifying his business model and increasing his revenue.

The Unexpected Reality of Marketing

The funny thing though was that his revenue bump didn’t come from where he was expecting. It came from being able to charge significantly more for his in-person services. The assets he built established authority and attracted higher-quality clients who were happy to pay premium rates. That was all he ever wanted.

Right on cue, his marketing agency told him the next stage was to “scale it further”. More ad spend, more work, more money. After we talked through what he actually wanted from life and business, we both agreed: more leads wasn’t what he needed or wanted.

Why Scaling Scares Technical Directors

I’ve had this exact conversation with a large handful of engineering and technical service directors. Somewhere along the way, they’ve been convinced that committing to an effective marketing function simply means more work. And I get why that triggers hesitation.

Lead gen and sales are only one piece of the puzzle. The real headache starts when you look at what "more" demands from your operations: hiring more staff, training, logistics, overhead, and managing more people. For a lot of owners, that’s the last thing they actually want so the conclusion is that marketing is not for them.

The Real Purpose Of Marketing

That misses the entire point of marketing.

Marketing doesn’t just grow your business—it gives you control over it.

Think back to what marketing afforded my friend for a moment:

  • The choice of pace: Deciding how fast he wants to grow—or staying right where he is.

  • The freedom of focus: Redirecting his energy toward what matters most to him right now.

  • Leverage: Having assets ready for when the right opportunity knocks.

  • Boundary control: The luxury to say no to bad-fit clients who don’t align with how he chooses to do business.

That’s what gets lost in all the noise around scale. Marketing isn’t just an accelerator pedal; it also gives you the space in your business to tap the brakes.

The freedom to say, “Yes, I’m ready to push,” or “No, I’m happy right here for now.”

A Quick Ask Before You Go:

Before the end of the year, I’m looking to partner with 1 or 2 engineering or technical service directors who want to build their businesses marketing ecosystem from the ground up.

To see if it makes sense, I’m offering a free, 1-on-1 communications workshop where we’ll:

  • Clarify how we'll articulate their technical expertise so the right clients get it.

  • Outline the assets and systems needed to build a consistent social media channel.

  • Determine whether we’re the right fit to work together.

If you or anyone you know is ready to get their marketing initiative off the ground before Christmas, let's talk.

How Do you Think That Went?
It’s easily the most frequent question I’m asked the second a podcast recording ends. It’s nearly always followed by a similar sentiment: "I hope you got what you needed out of it." No matter how relaxed a conversation feels, an interview is inherently a performance. It demands presence, adaptability, and emotional energy from both sides of the microphone. Over time, I’ve realized this post-rec...
My Daughter Turns One, And I’m Running a Business.
Big milestones force you to look in the mirror. They make you take stock of the challenges you’ve overcome, the things you’d do differently, and the ambitious goals still waiting to be reached. This week, my daughter turns one. And looking back on this year has brought me face-to-face with a practice that is severely underrated: deliberate reflection. ___________________________________________...
